Is there a plausible form of Libertarianism? Libertarianism, in its most general sense, is a political philosophy in which the upholding of individual liberty is the principle objective. More than that, however, Libertarians seek to maximize autonomy and freedom of choice; believing that each individual has the right to make their own choices about how to live their lives – as long as they respect the rights of others to do the same. This paper will deviate from this general perception; instead discussing Libertarianism in a narrower sense with a focus on the view of full self-ownership and moral acquisition of property rights. This specific approach is based largely on the work of John Locke and further elaborated by Robert Nozick, regarded as articulating a more right-wing’ interpretation of the libertarian doctrine. This essay will address the central questions that Libertarianism aims to answer and critique the various views surrounding those responses laying the foundation for the essay’s conclusion that right-wing Libertarianism is in fact an impractical and deficient political theory.
